About Department

       The Foreign Languages Education Department (FLED) was founded on April 22, 2002 and offers a M.A. program in English Language Teaching and non-thesis M.A program (distance education) accepted in 2019. BA program started in the 2012-2013 academic year with 47 students. The basic components of the undergraduate program consist of professional courses including methodological and pedagogical approaches to foreign language teaching as well as raising students’ awareness of the English language system. The main goal of the B.A. program is to prepare teachers of English as a foreign language to teach at primary, secondary and university levels. Taking into consideration the latest developments in the field, students are provided a wide selection of different courses in order to make them fully qualified teachers of English by organizing practice teaching in selected schools. Graduates from the FLED can work as teachers of English in high schools, preparatory schools of universities and as research assistants in English departments of universities. Department of English Language Teaching was founded on December 28, 1989 and offers a M.A. program in English Language Teaching. Focusing on research in the field including the latest developments, students are provided a wide selection of various courses in research methods, discourse and communication, E.L.T. methodology, testing, and materials design in order to make them fully qualified teachers of English. The program with a thesis is based on current issues in teaching and learning English and professional development of language teachers including coursework, individual research and an oral thesis defence examination. Graduates from E.L.T. department can work as teachers of English in high schools, preparatory schools of universities and as research assistants in the English departments of universities. In addition, they can occupy positions as administrators and teacher trainers as well as working in materials preparation and testing. Furthermore, a good number of graduates have gone on to do Ph.D. degree, some of them eventually joining the staff of the department. Members of the staff are involved in research in the areas of language education, linguistics, and literature. The Department participates in the Training of Academic Staff (ÖYP), through which it assumes the responsibility of educating future academic staff members for developing universities.

There are 287 undergraduate and 103 M.A students in the department. Totally, 220 students are graduated from the departmant of ELT.
